Quick Tip for Budget Living: Hot Chocolate GF

Living on a food budget and gluten-free?

Quick and easy treat I love to make for my kids and their friends, um, and me! I love hot chocolate more than coffee. I love chocolate. :) Hot chocolate is an easy treat for evenings, cold days, or morning and holidays. I love it year round and it is not high in calories as you can adjust the amount of sugar or milk, by using water and dry milk (which is usually non-fat) it is actually a healthy drink. If you add a dash of cinnamon, this is a very healthy spice that even helps balance your blood sugar which is helpful for diabetes and has other health properties. (Don't over due cinnamon though high doses are toxic, most people do not consume high doses though.) Chocolate has antioxidants that is good for health too.

Serve with candy sticks (or canes), marshmallows, or whipped cream. Use a ladle spoon for easy self serving for family or company.

To keep on hand in the cupboard for Hot Chocolate:

GF Hot Chocolate:

Bottled Water
Powdered Dry Milk (or add 1/2 cup liquid milk substitute: rice, soy, coconut, almond milk etc.)
Hershey's Cocoa (or other unsweetened cocoa)
Sugar
Cinnamon (optional)

In a small or medium sized pot (depending if this is for a large family or for company) fill with water inch from the brim. Turn on the stove to medium heat. Add a desired amount of dry powdered milk (about 1/2 cup for small pot/1 cup for medium pot), add Hershey's cocoa (3 tablespoons small pot or 1/4 cup for medium pot). Stir carefully. Add 1/4 cup for small pot or 3/4 cup sugar for larger pot. Stir again. Let heat until it simmers before it turns to a boil and remove from heat. Sprinkle teaspoon of cinnamon into the pot and stir or sprinkle cinnamon on top of drink once heated. Add whipped cream or GF marshmallows. Enjoy hot! For kids add a little cold milk or a couple ice cubes to cool it down.

So easy to keep these products on hand I don't buy cheap hot chocolate package mixes anymore! You can even mix the dry ingredients and store in a jar for quick cups of cocoa (just scoop a few spoons in hot water) or put a bow around a jar and give this hot chocolate mix as a sweet gift. Great for holidays too. Add candy canes to stir the cup of hot chocolate.
